Best Third Party Text Client

So for whatever reason, I can't see my contacts on Messenger as online on ANY of my devices. It's the primary way my significant other and I communicate, and we're severely hampered by this stupid problem. (She can see me as online and send me a message, and I can reply no problems. But only for five minutes, then it switches back to saying she's offline.)

So, I was wondering what you all thought the best third party chat client is. I know WPCentral recommends Kik, but Whatsapp gets a lot of press and I'm sure there are plenty of others. So what do you recommend, folks? Definitely something that isn't a battery hog.

I find WhatsApp a little more stable, the Kik app is quite buggy. Also IIRC you can use IM+ if you already both use Messenger accounts
