Best way to transfer files from laptop to S3?

What is the best way to transfer files to my new Surface? I tried to connect the laptop to the surface through the mini USB, but that didn't work. Do I just have to use a memory stick or SD card?

Hmmmm. Tablet is charging while connected so, I looked again. The Surface shows up in Explorer under Network, not a different device/drive (like my phone or Kindle does). Still can't connect and transfer files. Help!!

Yes or connect it to the same home network then you can also share/copy files.
