I have a new nokia 520 but am unable to get any ring tone. Am I missing a trick or should I at least a defult tone by switching ringtone ON. I can switch the vibration on and off OK but no ringtone whatsoever

Have you gone into settings/ringtones? Also is your volume all the way down?

Connect your Lumia to pc. Copy your desired ringtones to ringtone folder on your phone pr memory card.
On your phone, go to settings - ringtone + sound, you'll find your custom ringtone there
