Broken Glass, unusable touch. How do i get around it without repair ?

Hi,

I dropped my phone, the glass is smashed. 50% of the touch doesn't work ( mostly bottom and top left ). Unfortunately, I had a lock code and since the touch doesn't work, I can't enter the pin which means i can't access my data! I can press all the keys except 7,4,1. And i have to put one of these to enter the pin correctly.

I have been trying to get it repaired, but the cost is around $200. Since I dont have the money now, I was hoping to get a way around that allows me to access my data via PC/MAC ( and use the phone if possible ). I will get the glass repaired next month but right now i need to get my hands on the pics i took earlier this week.

In all circumstances (that I am aware of), the phone will ask for it's unlock code when you connect it to USB. Of course if it was a SIM PIN lock then you could just remove the SIM card.

Don't suppose you are automatically uploading your pictures to Skydrive?

I am uncertain that there is a workaround that would be acceptable to you. That said, you could try replacing the digitizer manually. The prices for the replacement parts vary, but often include the tools to do the job:

nokia lumia 820 replacement screen | eBay

The instructions for replacing the screen (or at least disassembly, etc.) should be available on Google.

Do you have device insurance? They could replace the device, oftentimes.

Nope unfortunately i had no external sync services installed.

I have warranty but when i tried to claim they said that the warranty can only be claimed for software issues.

And The digitizer seems awesome, i shall try it out. However, am still not sure that the touch is damaged or not. Currently am assuming that the touch is not working coz the screen is shattered, but is there any chance it continues not to work after replacing it with the digitizer, like the touch sensor is spoiled or something, is that possible ?

I replaced the digitizer on mine after it was dropped. It was super easy. Just make sure you order one with the frame housing attached. That way, you can just screw it in place, and you dont have to worry about glue like you do with most screens. If you look around, and are patient enough for orders from china, you should be able to get a digitizer for about $30.

as long as the socket that the digitizer is plugged into isnt crushed, you should be ok. it is very unlikely that you have damaged your motherboard, especially so since the phone still works.

when replacing the screen, your best bet is to follow the repair guide posted here a few months ago. it's pretty simple to follow. the only special tool you need is a #4 torx driver.
