Well, after reading/thinking/waiting/justifying, etc. for two months, I got me a Mogul yesterday. I have to say that after 24hrs, she's looking pretty good to me right now. I have not had a chance to make too many calls, but the voice/sound quality seems just fine to me - my family even likes it better than the Q because I talk loud and the Mogul filters me better! Anyway, the Sprint lady was almost shocked when I asked for one -"Are you sure?" she asked. "Yes, I can handle it", said I. She said they were getting a lot of returns - I can understand why - this is truely a advanced users phone/PDA. I am so glad I had some experience with the Treo and then the Q to ease me into a full-fledged PPC. It is almost overwhelming at first!

Anyway, I already have the HTC 3-tab plugin and I want to add my city to the weather choices. I have copied the weather city XML doc out of the Windows Directory and made adjustments, but when I tried to place it back, it was locked. I had a "Properties" choice in the menu for the Q but I don't seem to have this on the Mogul. How do I access - or what do I need to change - to allow me to edit the Windows files?

Congrats and welcome to big boys club now!!!!!! :p

I am not sure on the HTC plugin. I use the SPB shell instead and really like it.

Sorry, Hobbesie - what I meant to say - or at least more clearly - is that I have pulled a file out of the Windows directory and edited it - however, when I try to load the new file I am denied - file is locked or I don't have permission, can't replace, etc.

Lovin' the Mogul so far! BTW - I switched to the HTC 6-tab plugin and like it much better.

If you took it from the Q, then that is problem. The Q is a smartphone (non touch screen) OS. The Mogul is WM Pro (touch screen) OS. Since they are seperate OS, they need their own version of the program. It does get confusing with how closely they have named each the variations of the OS. :)

Yeah Bubba, welcome to the big boys club...LOL. I like mine too after what....3 weeks now? The PPC-6800 can be overwhelming for some. But once I dialed it in, the unit is pretty cool. I don't use everything, but what I need it for ...it's great. I use the SPB products too. They work nicely.

I had the PPC-6700 1.5 yrs ago, but took it back. It would go into Airplane mode by itself, light up everytime it checked my email, speaker phone was pretty bad and you could not turn it completely off. Drove me crazy in just a few days. That's why I waited for this second gen unit. .....

Sorry, I hijacked your thread...:o

No problems - thanks for jumping in. After 3 days now, I don't know what people are complaining about! :) This is a sweet phone. The kb is really nice, phone quality is decent and I am fairly surprised at the battery life (even though I have not made as many calls as I typically would during a work week).

The downside is the earpiece could be a little better (it is loud enough for me, but the sound is all tenor, no base) and the kb lights are inconsistent - sometimes they come on, sometimes they do not.

However, I am really questioning if I need this phone at this time. The Q is very "pocketable" - not to say the Mogul is not, just the Q is better and lighter. I really like the kb on the Mogul over the Q for email (and spell check!), but I am not on away from my computer that much. Really, for me, it comes down to: did I really need to spend $300 and open another line of service or was the Q good enough for another 6 months? Gonna give it a few more days and see......

No, nothing was related to the Q - I copied a file out of the Mogul's Windows directory, modified it and then tried to copy it back - that's when I got a "file locked, can not be replaced" type message. Anyway, it is a mute point now as I installed the HTC 6-tab plugin and my city was included in that weather plugin.

when comparing against the Q....touch screen is a big factor in that comparison. I would personally go thru withdrawals if I couldn't use a touch screen. :D

Funny you say that about the touchscreen - I went from the T650 to the Q and missed it for about 2 minutes. It has been sort of nice to have one back, but I still find I am trying to use the 5-way to navigate! I can really go either way and rarely miss the other. I must be bi-phonal (or bi-navigational?)!

Bubba, Bubba, Bubba. What am I going to do with you?
First, the keyboard lights are not "inconsistent". There is a small circle directly above your I/3 key. This is the light sensor. It keeps the keyboard from going off when "it" doesn't think you need it. This bugs me because I want them on all the time. There is a place in settings/buttons (Don't ask me)/backlight that allows you to toggle this feature off, but the power consumption goes up a bit. Not much, though, unless you feel the need to open your keyboard all the time.

Oh, Dr. THANK YOU for not belittling me as you now that I am just a shell of a Bubba lately. I am TRYING to do better and not just "take" all the time! Thanks so much for "giving" today! :)

Yes, I figured out the sensor thing and it is working better - or at least I know its personality better (sometimes you have to actually hit a key for the backlight to come on no matter how dark it is)!

i use spb pocket plus. it has added a "properties" to the file explorer popup menu as well as many other things. give it a shot (trial version). if you like it let me know before you buy it. i can get you a good discount.

resco also does properties but it can only be use within resco.

Yesterday, I made the switch from 755p to the Sprint Mogul as well. I'm getting more and more use to it. But, I am having a hard time with the one handed functionality. I was really use to being able to easily pull up a contact with one hand. Like all things, it takes time. I really like the way my email works with our Exchange server. The 755p worked okay, but there were several times I would get connection error messages. I think as I get my Today screen setup, I will really like this phone. I have used Pocket PC PDA's in the past. I just have to re-orient myself to them.

John, I am writing a multi part WM Beginners Guide and one of the sections n the 2nd or 3rd part is going to be totally focused on how to increase the one handed usability of a WM phone...so keep an eye for it.

But in short here is what I use to help with that:
  • SPB Shell
  • SPB Contacts
  • Phone Suite
  • PocketBreeze / PocketContacts
  • Wisbar & organize my menus

See the attached pictures below to get an idea how I do it.

Thanks Hobbes, that will help alot. I'm liking it more and more. I just have to get over the one-handed operation hurdle. Mostly just the simple nav type stuff, and it seems by the screen shots, these apps may take care of me.

Thanks again,
