Windows Central Question
Bug causes most apps to fail
A number of users have found, mainly after the November update, that many Microsoft apps and some others have failed completely, including the Store itself, People, Camera, Photos, Films and TV, Calculator, Maps, Alarms, Messaging and more. Tiles have gone blank and do not respond, and at the bottom of All Apps many apps are listed under the heading Other with strange names beginning with @. Clicking does not launch the app.
As the Store is unavailable no attempt can be made to re-install them from there, the online Store opens but you cannot download from it, you get the message 'You'll need a new app to open this ms-windows store.'
The PowerShell command (Admin) to re-register apps, used either from FixWin 10 or directly, does not work, apart from listing the failed apps with the statement "Packages could not be registered because there was a merge failure". What does that mean and what can be done about it?
It has been suggested that there was a bug in the November update which is causing all this. As many attempts have been made to solve it without success, surely Microsoft must issue a fix, perhaps in an update.
How do we get Microsoft to act? It is a quite substantial disaster, rendering Window 10 largely non-operational.
If anyone has further suggestions they would be welcome, as long as they are not a repeat of what is listed below as they have been tried many times.
Things which have been tried include:
The usual repairs with sfc/scannow, DISM, restore points, etc.
The PowerShell command (Admin) to re-register app packages
Creating a new account
Re-installing apps from online Store
Re-installing Windows 10, which has some success but is not widely welcomed
