Just purchased a Lumia 822 and the camera doesn't open. It tries to open and goes back to the start screen no matter which camera app I use. Has this happened to anyone and hopefully been solved? Tried soft & hard resets.

This just started happening to me today on an AT&T Lumia 920 (around 1 1/4 years old.) The WP8 built-in Camera app crashes when opened, after first showing the 4 control buttons momentarily, and apps that use the camera, e.g. Bing vision and Nokia Camera show black if not crash. Between when the camera worked in the AM (I took a photo with Project Tripod, and then took a photo with the built-in Camera app), and was not working in the PM (Bing Vision showed black, and then I tried the Camera app and it crashed.) I really hadn't used the phone for much of significance, dropped it, or anything else. It was just on my desk charging, right in front of me.

It was updated to Nokia Black on the developer preview program schedule, but no funny business otherwise. It's never done this before.

I did soft resets, and now a reset-phone & restore from yesterday's backup, but still no good.

There was a recent (yesterday?) update to one of the settings apps. I wonder if it was to blame. Note this post from yesterday reports a similar symptom: http://forums.windowscentral.com/nokia-lumia-1520/269804-camera-crashing.html

I too have an AT&T Lumia 920 over a year old with Windows Phone 8 (WP8).

About 7 days ago, April 10, 2014, I took some app updates and there was 2 system's area app also in the updates. I don't recall which it was...

After I downloaded all of them, I get the same issue as you - pressing the camera button or pressing the camera app tile shows the camera app for a few seconds but then it returns to home screen like it was crashing.

I have another app which uses the flash as a flashlight and this will not start now either.

Yesterday, I took the developer preview update, but this did not fix my camera problem.

Have you or any had any luck fixing the issue?

I still need a fix.

Best regards, Karhu.

No, no luck on fixing the issue. No restore or reflash (using Nokia's Windows app) corrected it. I didn't notice if the flash was also affected, but that's interesting. I'll check.

Nokia support and forums suggested I return it for repair to a 3rd party, but did not acknowledge it was a known class of issue. Because it was out of warranty, and I don't place much trust in 3rd party repair for unknown issues (that's a good way to loop the phone in the mail for weeks) I just got a replacement 920 (in really great shape) on eBay for $150 USD.

I have the similar issue with my Lumia 1520. This started 2 days ago. The app seems not responding. It doesn't start. I'd soft reset but still same. However when I set Microsoft camera as default, it works.
I would like my Nokia camera back. Anyone knows how to?

My suggestion would be to get your 1520 repaired or replaced under warranty.

It's the Nokia camera app considered as a third party app. If yes will it be covered u under warranty? If it is considered as a core app, then I think that it falls under warranty. It can't be 8.1 update as I have been using the app for almost a month.

So Microsoft camera works properly right it only crashes when you set default camera as nokia camera?

I had the same problem and it baffled me for days. Finally, I went into settings and found that an update had turned off all my app permissions... go into settings/app permissions/camera and turn the camera back on
