Can I activate my windows 10 with my windows 7 professional Product Key?

My laptop crashed. Bought a new Hard drive. Planning to install windows 10. If i install it, can I activate it with my windows 7 key?

You will need to restore 7 first then upgrade.

For the free 10, your previous version key will not work. It gets converted to a cloud authentication upon upgrade.
