newbie queries

I bought the Microsoft Lumia 535 about 3 weeks ago and have the following issues:

1. To my disappointment, youtube videos crash after about 30 minutes whether I go to the youtube website on the internet or use a youtube app. The one I am using is Wintube8. Nearly all the other features of my smartphone seem to work okay. My friend tells me that there is no such problem at all with his Android phone. He watches youtube videos of 1 or 2 hours duration without the video ever crashing. How do I fix this important problems on my Windows smartphone ? Is this a common problem with windows smartphones?

2. How do I download Windows 10 on my Lumia 535? I downloaded Windows 10 on my laptop and it is great.

3. I have found that when I play songs on the music xbox app that came installed with the Windows smartphone, the app does not shut down (and therefore keeps on using the battery power) even when I have shut it down by pressing the back arrow at the bottom and thumbnails appear of the various apps I have running and closing it there. I know this because when I press the volume control at the side of the phone, it shows that this app is still running. How do I close this app ?
If rebooting the phone is the only way of shutting down this app, then could someone tell me of an app that will allow me to shut it without having to reboot my phone each time? I will also need the new music app to be able to repeat a single song if I so wish.

Re: newbie queries

Welcome to Windows Central.

1. The Lumia 535 is inherently a lower-spec-ed phone, and hence performance issues (especially with certain graphics intensive apps, videos, etc.) are sort of expected.

2. You can either participate in the Technical Preview for Windows Phones, or wait for the official release later. The technical preview is not recommended if you're going to install it on a device you depend on for daily use.

3. There apps that supposedly completely quit the music player, but I normally stay away from such apps. In order to stop the music app completely, I simply launch any video file in my phone and then exit the video player.

Thank you for your honest replies.
What model Lumia smartphone will be able to give me a 3 hour youtube video without any problem?
Please tell me the cheapest model of microsoft windows smartphone that will be able to do this?

I have noticed one other problem since I posted. I have set Cortana to remind me of e.g. buying specific items when I arrive at a specific supemarket. I have listed in Cortana'a notebook in my favourite places, all the supermarkets I go shopping at. It has worked sometimes but in the past 2 days it has not worked. I make sure that the mobile data is available and the flight mode is switched off. Cortana reminds me when I tell it to at a specific day and time. But not when I tell it to remind me at a specific location that is listed on my favourite places.
e.g. when I cycled to one supemarket this morning, it did not remind me to buy the items when I was just outside. I waited and waited and checked the mobile data and it was on. But Cortana did not remind me.
I decided to test Cortana in another way. I tapped on PLACES in Cortana and tapped on my home location which is also listed there along with the supermarket locations. I then tapped on DIRECTIONS from my location. And the wonderful thing is that it gave me the correct route from the supermarket that I was outside, to my home. Evidently Cortana knew my location. So why did it not remind me? What is wrong?

Re: newbie queries

You're most welcome.

Hmm, I haven't tested all models of Lumias to be able to answer your first question. I mean, a three-hour YouTube video is a demanding task with regards to power/energy supply, considering that you need to a) have the screen turned on for three hours and b) continually streaming/downloading data - two of the most highly power-consuming mobile phone activities. Your best bet would be to look at ask our community about the L1520 in the L1520 forums... but you may choose to just have either a power bank with you or your phone charger and an outlet for that purpose. The L1520 wasn't exactly cheap when it was announced, but now that it's several months older it is definitely more affordable now.

Another remark about the L535 - a lot of users have reported reliability issues with the GPS antenna, i.e. it doesn't update accurately while driving or travelling. So, if this is also the case for your L535, then it will be expected that location-based reminders won't work all the time. Cellular site triangulation may work at times, but the accuracy of that method isn't as reliable as direct GPS/GLONASS. It's not that the GPS antenna doesn't work at all, it usually takes more time than usual (compared to other phones) to lock your position, especially during cloudy days.

Re: newbie queries

Thanks again.
Is the direct GPS/GLONASS that you refer to available on other Lumia phones such as the Lumia 1520? Can you clarify this for me please?
Apparently Cortana can also give reminders based on persons e.g. (“Remind me to ask about summer vacation next time I talk to Mom”).
Can I do this with my Lumia 535? if so, how?

Re: newbie queries

Yes, it is available for the L1520, based on this official Specifications page - scroll down to "Maps and navigation" and you would find "Location technologies" where the methods through which the phone determines its location are enumerated. I'm not sure what kind of clarification you would want in addition to the link pasted here - do you want a clarification about GPS/GLONASS itself or just the L1520 and other Lumias? You can check the specification of each Lumia phone through Microsoft similar to the link pasted here.

Yes, you can let Cortana remind you based on your contacts. You can either tell Cortana something similar to what you've typed above (about your Mom), but you would need to set a Cortana nickname for your Mom if your Mom isn't listed as "Mom" in your People Hub. For example, if my best friend is named "Jose Raul Capablanca", then I would set a Cortana nickname* for him in the People Hub. Once I have set "best friend" as his nickname, I can simply tell Cortana something like, "Remind me to ask my best friend about chess when I talk to him" - next time he calls or texts, Cortana will remind me about chess. Otherwise, if I didn't give a nickname to my best friend, I would have to say "Remind me to ask about chess when I talk to Jose Raul Capablanca" - which is definitely longer, but still as effective.

*- There are at least two ways on how you can add Cortana nicknames to your Contacts. One is by going to your People Hub, selecting the Contact and editing the name - in there you'll find at the very bottom part of the page to "Add Cortana Nicknames". The other method is to go to Cortana settings, Inner Circle, and then tap on the "+" symbol so you can add contacts to your Inner Circle and then give them a nickname. However, this second method is not recommended if you just want to add a nickname without adding the contact to your Inner Circle.
