i want to buy a at&t unlocked 2520 off someone but at this time i will just use it for WIFI can i do that or is there certain locks or something has to have a sim in it? thanks

what about software updates? will software updates care that it has no sim? oh and what does it say with no sim? does it have just a tiny no sim by clock or what? thanks

A device with a Sim slot is like any other port. USB, HDMI, etc. It appears where you would see the WiFi. Think like a computer, it can have Ethernet and WiFi. With this you have WiFi and SIM, but the SIM is disconnected,

Can I also do this on a phone?
I want to get my younger son a phone, but not connect it to the cellular network. They have Wi-Fi at school and we have it at home, plus most places we go. I figure he can get in touch with me through Skype, or whatever chat app he wants to use. Can I do this? For $50, this seems like a great option without the cellular bill. Anyone done this? How does it work? Still get OS updates? Developer Preview? How about firmware updates? Unlocked phone?

I haven't tried it with a Windows phone, but I have taken my old iPhone and basically turned it into an iPod that I keep most of my music on and I still get all the iOS updates and stuff so theoretically it sounds like it would work, but being that I haven't tried it with a Windows based phone I can't say one way or the other whether it will work or not as far as getting the OS and Developer Preview and firmware updates. Other than that the phone should work with any wi-fi hotspot you can connect to without a hitch.
