Windows Central Question

can I use my Lumia 640 in Japan?

I bought lumia 640 because i'm a big windows phone fan and I want to use it in Japan. with any carrier in Japan. I went to AU Japan but they said They cannot give a sim card for my phone. is there any way to use it in Japan. Someone please help

Thank you

As long as the network supports the GSM frequencies you can use it. Check network band compatibility with carriers and a regular mini SIM is what you'll need after that. On another note, I've read that Here Maps and Drive don't work in Japan.

Edit: Looks like AU is CDMA. So yes, you won't be able to use the 640 on AU. Look for GSM carriers.

Yes, it works with NTT Docomo. There is no GSM in Japan, only 3G/4G. You can buy data only SIM cards, but cannot telephone other than Skype etc. unless you are resident.

Prepaid. As a tourist - not resident - you cannot buy anything else. Good is IIJMIO Sim card with 2GB. You have to configure APN by hand, and the phone says "no connection", but it works. Took me 30 minutes to get it running, but then it was good everywhere.

Just google iijmio. It's valid for 3 months and you can top up more gigs if empty.

If you have a student visa, you may also look into regular SIM cards. Generally, docomo works well with windows phones. But don't ask anybody about WP help, they have probably never seen one.
