can windows 10 home be loaded onto computer with windows 7 pro

I have tried and it sticks at looking for updates and goes no further with installation

Hi Welcome to Windows Central. What installation media are you using to install W10. The W10 free upgrade date has expired.
You can still get a free version here! You Can Still Get Windows 10 for Free from Microsoft’s Accessibility Site

If you are upgrading (so as to keep your files) then Pro only upgrades to Pro.

If you do a clean install you can have any version you desire.
