Cant download any updates?

I bought a second hand laptop with W7 installed, When I check for updates it just sticks at checking for updates, I then reinstalled W7 same thing, I then downloaded W10, All downloaded fine but it checks for updates before it starts installing and same issue, it sticks at checking for updates. I have applied the various MS fixes but they also just freeze and do nothing. Any idea on how I can get W10 on this laptop?
