Card Reader for Windows Phone?

Newbie here - in to day 5 of my trial on the windows phone. I've spent many years with the iPhone and then a short in between visit with a temp Nexus 4 while phone shopping and both supported the card readers for Sqaure and PayPal. And, neither are supported on the Windows Phone - is there an alternative I'm missing?
