Changed file name, now cannot access

** hi guys, I mistakenly changed a couple of photo file names,
BEFORE copying them into win7, now I cannot get them out of the phone,
nor share them to email. but I still see them in the Gallery.

any ideas please ? maybe I could edit the file names back to WP_xxxxxx
format, but I cant see how to do that either, thanks

Hi Alan, do you mean Win 7 as you say in your post or do you mean Windows Phone 8? You posted this in the 920 forum and it makes a huge difference on the answer.

** sorry I wasn't clear Muessig. the phone is Nokia 925, and the computer is win 7.
I opened the phone with Win-8 phone App, which annoyingly only seems to want to
sync the whole lot without allowing selection ?
but then made mistake of changing a couple of file names on the phone,
instead of copying them to the computer first.
Now I cant access the files at all, and not transmit them by email either.
despite that, the pics still show in Gallery, so they are still in the phone
somewhere. I believe if I could edit them back to their original names,
the phone system could handle them properly, but not yet found the editor.
** its a new purchase, so not found my way round it all yet. thanks

Okay so I think you have a few things you could try, given that the pictures still show up in the gallery.

• Try to edit the picture and save over it - this could force the system to rename it
• Maybe setting it as a favourite or adding it to the lockscreen could force the system to interact with the picture and rename it or at least make it visible
• Try to share it - you said email didn't work but you could try to message, facebook or NFC Send it to another phone to recover the image
• You could also try to save the image(s) to your SkyDrive account, which would give you a full resolution backup.

Let us know if any of these options work out for you!

cropped some and saved, then selected all to email. but only the non-altered pics arrived.
not sure about setting lockscreen. maybe cant get it off again !!
skydrive says cannot upload.
not tried messaging yet.

** I encountered this prob years ago on a canon camera,
but was able to see the files and change their names back
to a sequence number that the can software recognised.
but I cant see the 925 file names. any idea where they are ?

** this is interesting --- when I usb into "phone /pictures /camera roll"
I can see all the files correctly sequenced, and most of them open ok
with win pic viewer, except the lost ones which say "file is empty"
so it must be just a thumbnail which the 925 has retained in gallery ?

The WP8 OS does take temporary files and snapshots of images yeah. This is why you can delete an image and have it appear on your photo tile for a day or so. So are you able to gain access through plug & play to the files you want to, or is the issue still ongoing?

no I cant get the file, only see thumbnail in gallery.
why u say "for a day or so ?
