Consuming Mobile Data even though it's turned OFF !!!

I've turned Mobile Data off from the day I took my Lumia 950 out of its box, mainly because I don't have a data plan with my phone carrier. So, I always use internet over wi-fi connections. And if I happen to need internet connection and I dont have any wifi nearby, only then I turn the Mobile Data on, and my carrier charges me for a 1-day use only.
The thing is, that every 4 or 5 days, I get An SMS from my carrier saying "Welcome to the 24-hour internet. You have 50mb to spend during the following 24 hs...", etc.
I don't know what app is accessing the mobile data, EVEN THOUGH I HAVE IT TURNED OFF. I'm suspicious about Maps, since one day, as soon as I opened it, I got the SMS. I've tried everything in the settings to prevent consuming any data, but this keeps on happening.

Any ideas what this might be ? Thanks in advance.

Go to the messaging app (sms messages) and turn off "sync messages between devices" in the settings menu (the three dots ... at the bottom of the screen).
This setting has been causing lots of data usage on Win10 mobile devices.

Unfortunately I already had that turned off, as well as the automatic backups. Don't know what to do...

Do you get the same message when you normally purchase data for the day?

What does your Data Usage app (under Settings) say about your data usage?

You don't get an SMS like that when you use data, only when purchasing data which the phone can't do by itself. Perhaps the carrier is having a promotion and giving you free data for the day?

Yes, it's the same message. It's even saying how much money charged in the next bill for the 1-day use.

As for the Data Usage, it doesn't discriminate between wi-fi and mobile data (it does in the cake chart, but not in the Usage details where it says which apps used data).

You have to enable "data limit" for it to split it between Sim1, Sim2 (in my case it is a dual sim) and Wifi. It will replace the pie chart and let you select individually to view which apps are using data by connection. I was going crazy about this too until i decided to turn on data limit and voila!

Thanks. Will try that. What settings did you use for the Data Limit?

on the same screen you were (All Settings>Network and Wireless>Data usage), below the pie chart (don't click on usage details), there is the option to set "Data Usage limit". Click on "Set Limit". Configure it based on your cell phone plan, or however you like really. If you think there is something wrong, you may want to limit to below your plan threshold.

Another option is to manually set an wrong APN setting on purpose, so even if the phone try to run data in the background, it won't since the APN setting is wrong and will not connect at all. Plus set your data sense to 0 too.

Thanks. The only drawback would be that every time I do need mobile data connection, I would have to set the true APN, and go back and forth between the true and the false all the time.

then set two APN, and switch to the wrong one for normal days, and right one when you need DATA.

I have an odd situation with data. I have a 950 with dual sim. I only use one sim and it is in sim one slot. Sim slot 2 is empty and it uses data regularly. Data usage is nowhere near accurate.
