I got a message saying they separated new from old messages too, to make it easier to see new messages/contacts. That didn't happen though, must require an update.
It's also possible that something in the Cyan firmware update or even WP8.1 breaks Kik completely. It hasn't even been updated to support features in WP8.0 and even then that last update was over 2 years ago. Their Facebook page mentions various updates for "Android and iPhone" - nothing whatsoever for WP (there probably is but I'm not scrolling back 2 years worth of posts).
