Delete entire word at a time?

I'm unable to figure out how to delete an entire word, instead of holding down the backspace key for what seems like forever. Surely this most basic of functions is available?

I'm unable to figure out how to delete an entire word, instead of holding down the backspace key for what seems like forever. Surely this most basic of functions is available?

Simply tapping the word doesn't work for you? I just tap, it gets highlighted and I tap backspace.

Touch the word to highlight it like you're going to correct, then backspace

I was thinking more like trying to erase an entire sentence quickly. That method will likely work. I'll just need to wrap my head around it.

Tap a word to highlight it and show "selection extension" circles at each end of the word. Drag those circles outward to select the words (or sentences) that you want to remove. Once the desired text is highlighted, press the backspace key on the keyboard.
