Windows Central Question

Windows updated with the 10 Anniversary edition. It now takes 10 minutes for my computer to boot up, but on the positive side -- it has gone back to freezing up the way it did with Windows 8! I have to turn it off and then wait another 10 minutes for it to boot up again. Great Job Microsoft -- I think the next computer I get will be an Apple!

The amount of money you would spend on apple hardware, if you spend the same on a windows machine, I'm sure you would not have to wait 10mins :) My Asus gl552vw with win10 AU boots up in less than 20seconds.

check for apps that are enabled on startup, those could raise the boot up time of a pc. Go to task manager > startup items and turn off any 3rd party app that is meant to startup as windows boot.

Settings > updates and security > Recovery

Reset your PC. It will get a clean install going . This will also remove any viruses/malware unless they have boot sector presence. You will have to setup your system all over but it's just like if you got a new computer. If it doesn't solve it, it could be a hardware issue.

its unlikely that a virus is at large. Windows 10 is the most secure version to date.

and then there was one, could be a malware too but 1 in-a million. OP please tell us more do you visit lots of unsecure websites ( with unsecure i mean HTTP disabled ) or click on lots of ads and install certain app shown off in an ad?

If you have a virus on windows 7 or 8 and then you upgrade to 10, it could be that the virus is trying to do something over and over in a loop but new security is preventing it. Anything could be possible. It just makes no sense to boot that long no matter how many applications you have. It takes 4 seconds for my pc to get from cold boot to login prompt.

Reset is just the simplest thing for someone who may not want to fuss with things. It also makes sure that the integrity of the OS is correct.

Alternatively:

Check if Disk is full. To update to anniversary update it had to download the files and then install them. It keeps the files in a folder.

Type "Disk cleanup" in the cortana box and clean up files in both regular mode and then the system file mode.

Find errors on drive:

In Dos mode type :
sfc /scannow

Honestly, I did a reset after anniversary update because I wanted to start clean and my PC has been running great.

How many programs you have at startup?

Yes, startup is very slow as well as opening off line programs. In response to other replys. I have not had this problem until the update. I have done nothing different and not been on different websites. This is clearly related to the Windows 10 anniversary update. I could not find anything through windows or my PC website to fix this.

Hi Mine starts up very fast because I seldom shut it down. I have a 5 yer old Toshiba laptop that runs like a dream machine. When I do shut it down, I never time it to see how long it takes to boot windows, but I'm sure it doesn't take 10 minutes. Here's 10 ways that might speed up boot time. I'm not recommending any of them. Use at your own risk. Why is everyone always in a big hurry??
Again, these aren’t the only ways to shorten your computer’s boot time, but they are some of the most well-known, trusted methods that we’ve found. If you have any of your own favorite tweaks, share them with us in the comments, but beware of myths and snake oil—there are a lot of tweaks out there that do more harm than good.

Try booting in safe mode, if it boots very much faster, then the issue is likely software, rather than hardware. It will at least give you a starting point. Also, check the event logs, if the hard drive is failing (which would cause these symptoms) there are normally lots of errors logged in the "system" section in the event log.

Having been with iOS previously and Android recently, I have to say that I utterly LOVE W10 M! I have a 640 that I used for over a year and upgraded to a 950 XL last week Thursday. My laptop is also on W10. I have to place it on record that W10 M is VERY buggy, but the pros outweigh the cons. When it comes to productivity, in my experience, nothing touches W10 and W10 M. Nothing!
