Edge browser won't play audio when Surface is sleeping

Hey guys, new Surface 3 owner here. I'm noticing that if I'm listening to audio that's playing in Edge, it stops playing once the Surface goes to sleep. I thought Edge was a supported app for the new Connected Standby feature...? I have Edge enabled to run in the background in Settings, so why does it stop playing audio once the device goes to sleep? What am I missing here? Thanks for any info.

Are you sure it's sleep and not hibernate?

It's absolutely NOT hibernating - it's in sleep mode. (as far as I'm aware, you can't even get it to hibernate unless you tweak some settings)

Favor: would someone else mind trying this for me on their Surface 3? It's easy enough to do, just play audio and let it go to sleep. :)

Don't forget to provide a link for the site in which you were listening to music. Perhaps the behavior is different from site to site.

I was listening to a podcast on overcast.fm. I've could certainly be wrong, I'd be floored if that made any difference.

Edit: just tested Pandora. same thing.

As far as I know music will not continue to play in sleep mode and never has. I have used Edge to listen to music with the settings configured so that the display turns off after a few minutes and it continues to play but I also have it set to stay on when plugged in. Sleep is the same thing as standby and the computer is essentially paused and can be brought back to life quickly.

Ok, but the example I keep hearing around here is Groove Music - which apparently WILL keep playing music when you're Surface is asleep. The reason is because of Connected Standby, which allows for Modern apps to continue to do stuff in the background. Legacy win32 apps can't take advantage of this, but Modern apps can. (which Edge is, as far as i'm aware)

You are correct that Groove will play in sleep, I just checked it, so, I stand corrected. I tried playing music with Media Monkey and found it would stop playing when the display turned off even though the Surface was not in sleep mode. That is when I first heard about connected sharing and found that Groove would play when the screen went off. I didn't know that it would play in sleep mode.

Don't let anybody tell you you're not helpful Chintan; you keep sharing more nuggets of wisdom like this and you'll be running this site before long!

So far no one has commented on my posting abilities and assistance. I don't know if what you said was a compliment or sarcasm. I'll take the former

Shoot, I was worried that the sarcasm might be lost on you. :) Look, I'm sure there are some diehard microsoft fans around here who are forcing themselves to use (and like) Groove music, but I just don't think that's in the cards for me. But your comment made no sense because I'm streaming audio over the web. These aren't things I can just download and play with Groove. (and even if I could, that would be a pretty horrible and time consuming work-around)

Thanks all for the input, I don't know if this is a bug or maybe just something that has yet to be implemented. Hopefully this will work in future builds of Windows 10!

I don't use groove music on the laptop since I still like windows media player which I can use skins and have it transparent while playing.

I understood your sarcasm,

I had hoped it was something you could download. And I hope it does get fixed as you said

So I read your "...or is that too much work...?" as a snarky response, which is why I responded with snark as well. If I misread that, then my apologies. I'll probably submit something on Microsoft connect (or whatever that site is where you can provide feedback) on the off-chance that maybe this is something that slipped through the cracks.
