EE - 'Cash on Tap' announced - no WP support though yet

EE today announced they'd be introducing 'Cash on Tap' this month - a way to pay for items using NFC on your mobile phone, the same way you use your contactless card in shops.

"Great!" I thought, thinking I could finally use my Lumia 920 to pay for things and use the wallet hub for something it was designed for.

Wrong.

After I tweeted them asking what devices would be supported, they came back and said "Samsung Galaxy S4, Sony Xperia SP and Samsung Galaxy S3 LTE" with the ever vague "more devices will follow."

Looks like we may be waiting a while longer to do this with our Windows Phones then!

I hear ya. Was looking into something that they are rolling out with Verizon and Redbox over here and got the dreaded "more devices will follow". At least they had a list of devices and you could check the ones that you were waiting on to get an alert when it came out.

Yup two years and still counting! I just found out about cash-on-tap and was searching if here was a WP app, and this post came up....

Can't say I'm surprised really! You never know, things may change with W10M but I'm not holding my breath!

I'm curious as to whether it'll still work so long as you have an NFC enabled SIM. Reason being is this on their FAQs...

"How does Cash on Tap work when my phone is off/battery is flat?

The Cash on Tap service will work even when your phone is switched off or your battery is low. It is only when your battery is completely flat that the service will not work. All transactions will be recorded on your account which you can see once you've accessed your Cash on Tap app or the online account."

That would suggest no app is required or even any relevance of the OS. I'd bet all the app does is just gives you the update saying the transaction worked and how much, but given the chip and antenna for NFC is in the battery and it ties up with the SIM for authentication then I can't see why the phone needs anything other than NFC support.

Of course you have to convince EE to send you one of their NFC SIMs without being a "supported" phone.
