external hard drive backup windows10

Hi.
Windows 10 installed on an Acer Notebook that originally ran WIndows 7.
This is what I did the first time - going to settings > update and security > backup > Back up using file history > automatically back up my files is ON > more options > (i'm pretty sure i clicked on something that said do a backup now or similar. But the screen closed and nothing else has popped up. I've gone back and did the same as above but as soon as i click on 'more options' the screen closes.
So now I can't tell if a backup is being made onto the external harddrive.
Is there another way I can find out/am I doing the backup wrong?

right click the start menu, choose CONTROL PANEL

Go to FILE HISTORY

It should say the back up is in progress or at least identify the location of back up.

You can also open the harddrive in file explorer and see if anything is written there
