Full windows 10 backup

If I do a full windows backup and choose to use an external disk drive E: will it then create a file on E or will it scratch the whole E so I loose my data I already have on E ?

It depends on the tool you are using to create the backup. Some will create a backup in a folder you specify, keeping your existing data. Others will inform you that the external drive has to be formatted first before the backup can start.
