Hi all,
Been looking at the MS User Voice website today. Things have changed a lot - many of the top voted suggestions now really are quite superficial nice-to-have features rather than real bona fide shortcomings or significant examples of functionality that WP is lacking compared to other platforms. This is great news.
I have a suggestion however that, as simple as it is, I think would provide a genuine real-world improvement for WP, if only in a small way. Unfortunately my feature suggestion on WP UserVoice is stuck right down at the bottom of the pile with only 15 votes at the moment, so I thought I'd try and drum up a bit of interest here and see what people think.
It's something that would definitely benefit me personally and I think many others also. More specifically this relates to the Glance screen, so would really be a change to the Lumia firmware rather that the core OS.
My five lock/glance screen 'quick status' apps are calls, texts, WhatsApp, email and a battery app. So when my phone is charging on my desk, if I'm away for a couple of minutes, when I return I can see without touching my phone if I've had any notifications for any of those apps. However if any other notifications have been received in my absence, such as say a facebook message or eBay alert, there is no way to know. Only when I go to the phone and power it on to the lock screen do I see the generic notification icon on the status bar at the top - then I know there's something I've missed.
So my suggestion is simple: make the generic notification icon visible somewhere on the glance screen. Then we'd know just be looking whether any notifications for any app have been received without even touching the phone. (Taking this further you could even display the icon for the specific app or apps that have had notifications, which would sort of replace the five 'quick status' icons, but perhaps that's something for another day...)
Anyway, this makes loads of sense to me, and is something that as a developer I'd have thought wouldn't be hugely complex to implement. So if you agree give it a few votes and let's see if we can help make the user experience of the WP/Lumia platform even better than it already is.
Thanks for reading.
