Glance Feature Suggestion on UserVoice - Needs votes!

Hi all,

Been looking at the MS User Voice website today. Things have changed a lot - many of the top voted suggestions now really are quite superficial nice-to-have features rather than real bona fide shortcomings or significant examples of functionality that WP is lacking compared to other platforms. This is great news.

I have a suggestion however that, as simple as it is, I think would provide a genuine real-world improvement for WP, if only in a small way. Unfortunately my feature suggestion on WP UserVoice is stuck right down at the bottom of the pile with only 15 votes at the moment, so I thought I'd try and drum up a bit of interest here and see what people think.

It's something that would definitely benefit me personally and I think many others also. More specifically this relates to the Glance screen, so would really be a change to the Lumia firmware rather that the core OS.

My five lock/glance screen 'quick status' apps are calls, texts, WhatsApp, email and a battery app. So when my phone is charging on my desk, if I'm away for a couple of minutes, when I return I can see without touching my phone if I've had any notifications for any of those apps. However if any other notifications have been received in my absence, such as say a facebook message or eBay alert, there is no way to know. Only when I go to the phone and power it on to the lock screen do I see the generic notification icon on the status bar at the top - then I know there's something I've missed.

So my suggestion is simple: make the generic notification icon visible somewhere on the glance screen. Then we'd know just be looking whether any notifications for any app have been received without even touching the phone. (Taking this further you could even display the icon for the specific app or apps that have had notifications, which would sort of replace the five 'quick status' icons, but perhaps that's something for another day...)

Anyway, this makes loads of sense to me, and is something that as a developer I'd have thought wouldn't be hugely complex to implement. So if you agree give it a few votes and let's see if we can help make the user experience of the WP/Lumia platform even better than it already is.

Thanks for reading.

Get the facts straight please. :) They ended support for the Glance Background app, not Glance itself. ;)

Back to the topic on hand though, I'd like to change it just a bit - either add the "missed notification" icon as a 6th icon at the bottom, or where the vibration /alarm icons are. Pretty much, I'm giving suggestions as to where it should go. :p

Yeah, I get that we don't want the glance screen too busy really but there is a lot of free space there at the moment. I've felt since they put the notification icons in that five feels a bit limiting, I really struggled to decide which five would make the cut! Sick of facebook anyway )

Really?..I didn't know that...cause have never used glance ( using nokia Lumia 525) so I thought that they are both the same....

That is a good idea and relatively simple.

Also, does anyone have an issue with windowsphone.uservoice, cortana.uservoice?

Both divert back to The Smartphone Reinvented Around You | Windows Phone (United States) for me and have been doing so for over a week :eck: I was under the presumption they are merging them together, now I'm not too sure.

Definitely both options. Maybe add this comment to the feature suggestion on UserVoice? I don't want to plagiarise )

They dont even care about including the GLANCE feature into their new phones !!
530 - NO
630 - NO
635 - NO
730 - NO
735 - NO
830 - YES (!?)
930 - NO

Why should they add new GLANCE features if only one new devices has it ?
I heard they will remove GLANCE from the 830 via a Update !

Never looked at it like that and... wtf?! Is that right? That's disturbing.

If you see, MS is killing it and not Nokia. Nokia has provided it on every phone but after that acquisition.... Oh well you can see.

520 didn't have it. 929/930 didn't have it. Both pre-acquisition hardware.

They wouldn't be demoing Glance with Bing weather support if they were killing it.

Any solid reports beyond rumors?

They'll add Glace features because L620, 720, 820, 920, 925, 928, 1020 and 1520 and now the L830 supports it.

Why wouldn't they improve Glance ? It's not like they won't include it in other future products.
