With the recent announcement of Groove Music Pass shutdown, and as a Microsoft customer from music streaming service, I just wondered if what does that partnership contract says with Spotify.

Is very clear that ZMP, XMP or GMP will be ceased shortly, however, Groove Music App received updates and refinements for the last months, even after the Spotify partnership and inclusion on Windows Store desktop app. Also recently a new Spotify UWP app is available on Xbox One.

So this lend me to think that Microsoft strategy is to service more unified experience for Spotify across devices, then allowing Groove Music app to stream directly from Spotify service.

This leaves Microsoft on the app software development side and Spotify on the streaming licensing service.

Also we shouldn't forgot the Microsoft effort with Xamarin to develop, not only across devices varieties, but also on multiple platforms. Giving the oportunity to position as a software development company.

Also they may think on store spotify music library on their cloud services, wich match with the current Nadella vision of cloud first, and enterprise positionment, not only beign their parners, but also as a service provider.

Just read carefully the announcement and you will notice this argument is posible.

How do people still come up with these convoluted scenarios for what is clearly not going to happen? Sir, you've outdone yourself.

Yeah, it just looks like a decision based on simple economics. Groove wasn't making money for them, so they decided to kill it. Although I liked the service, I think it was getting pummelled by Spotify, iTunes, and Google's offerings.

And also I agree with the idea of closing their service because is just about to cause looses to the company, if didn't already loosing for it.

A simplier scenario is just simple use Groove app as model to selling app development to different providers. That could also explain the recent app updates. Trying to sell the concept to the service. Or simplier providing cloud infraestructure.

After reading a few articles I know the plan is to transfer streaming responsibilities to Spotify, though they also stated that Groove would remain as a media player for local media.

Does anyone know if Groove will still be able to stream music from you collection in OneDrive after the transfer?
