My mom is using a battered old Pantech, and I'd like to welcome her to the Windows Phone family with an inexpensive unlocked device, such as the 610 or 710; both are less than $100 on eBay. But I don't know anything about buying and using an unlocked phone, and I don't want to get involved with changing her current AT&T plan to score an upgrade.

Is it as simple as removing the SIM from her current handset and inserting it into the unlocked device?

Thanks!

If you're buying a device that is already unlocked yeah all you have to do is remove the SIM card from her current handset and put it in your new device.

If you're buying a device that's currently locked and you want to unlock it, you need to ring up the current provider and get an unlock code, which you can enter when you insert the SIM that's from another network.

This is a really quick overview, let us know if you need any more info!
