here drive app ??

If I'm not mistaken the here drive app is available for all wp8 phones.

Muessig is correct Here Drive is available for all wp8 devices I have it on my 8x

Depends on where you live though, I can't download it to my Ativ S, live in Finland Nokia-land

Nokia Here is only available in some markets. In Germany T-Mobile provides Navigon for free for WP8 devices that lack Nokia Here. I have Navigon, but I find it expensive for most people.

Seems to depend on your SIM card, more specifically, on the MCC (Mobile Country Code) of your SIM card. So if you happen to use Rogers/T-Mobile USA/Verizon/Vodafon SIM in Finland, you will be able to use Nokia app, albeit being charged for roaming... But if you are using Sonera, Elisa, etc. - you are in trouble and you won't be able to pass MCC checks performed by the HERE Drive app upon its start.

I used to use Navigon on my HD7, a little pricey as you say but it's the best alternative considering Tomtom isn't available.

That Garmin owned Navigon was good for WP 7.x, they provided tons of maps and the app worked well. Now that I am stuck. Look at this, getlemen. What countries is it for? No clue. Will I be able to run it in Finland provided that reportedly the app doesn't start in France. How come they provide such an expensive (for the Marketplace) app without even giving you a few runs to try it out? Spending like hundred plus EUR to just see it's not working would be terrible. They don't even have the app enlisted on their site! WTF, sir?

When I was using it there were maps for most if not all regions. But I know what you mean, a trial or make the app free and pay just for the maps would be a good thing for them to have.

I did find it listed on the English website NAVIGON for Windows Phone 7 | NAVIGON - a Garmin company. though. I also found map coverage as well:

NAVIGON Europe - Albania, Andorra, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Finland, France, Gibraltar, Greece, United Kingdom, Ireland , Italy, Croatia, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Monaco, Montenegro, Netherlands, Norway, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Sweden, Switzerland, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Czech Republic, Hungary, Vatican

Firstly, this is listed for Navigon for Windows Phone 7, yikes! I know all WP are supposed to run on every WP version, however there are, cough, examples that don't. Consider Navitel. Their version Navitel for Windows Phone 7 works specifically on Windows Phone 7 platform and won't run on Windows Phone 8.

Going next. On this page, if you choose Maps, you will have the following list of maps:

  • So what's the real coverage? Will I be able to use it in Russia, Turkey, Ukraine (since they are listed as covered), or there is NO support for these maps for Windows Phone platform?
  • Do they support Windows Phone 8 platform? The page shows Navigon for Windows Phone 7 but the Download fuer Windows Phone link follows you to the page where there is NO support for Windows Phone 7. Instead, only Windows Phone 8 is listed as supported platform.

Customers over at Russian Marketplace report there is NO map for Russia, although Ukraine is available. The coverage list has both present. So what is included and what is not, I wonder. )
I believe the coverage list may have been borrowed from the iPhone platforms. Poor marketing guys at Garmin. Hundred bucks is pretty big money to throw it. I would've spent twice as much easily if I knew exactly what I get and what I don't.
This really pisses me off! I only I could try the app even for a day and check to see if it even runs on my device and if it covers my desired locations, that would be perfectly enough for me to make a decision. What a bardak as we say in Hebrew.

Look at the Technical Data page, it states:

"Compatible with all Windows Phone devices. NAVIGON Version 4.5 or later is compatible with Windows Phone 8 only."

However, as you mention, the coverage is a major issue and those are big discrepancies between the two lists of countries covered.

Yup, and I got it mentioned in my post above. But, look, that's what confuses you even further so. They could've been ever so slightly accurate with how they advertise the product name and its technical data, rightfully so. It says Navigon for Windows Phone 7, you drill down and you get that the product that advertises support for Windows Phone 7 does not offer support for this platform.

I really appreciate the speed and responsiveness of Navigon Support, but that's what was in their prompt reply to my question regarding the coverage, I am quoting:
Thank you for your e-mail.
Unfortunately we do not provide the maps for Russia for Windows Phone.
We only offer the application for Russia on the iPhone.
The map coverage is the general coverage for all the countries that we support on all platforms.
We understand it is confusing as you clicked on this link from the Windows Phone page.

The information will be forwarded to the correct department and perhaps it will be adjusted.
We apologize for the confusion and inconvenience.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any other questions.

Yours sincerely,

I highly appreciate this swift response from the Navigon, because I was near to buying costly software that I would have not been able to use.

I was shocked by how many customers in Russian market got n@iled with this offer from Navigon. Just imagine, you have a target market for a specific area and you have a product that is directly related to geolocation. The offer does not expressly tell that native location for the target market is NOT (surprise!) support by the product. Now you follow the product link to the international site, because Russian site is just as flat out empty and disorientating and those roads down to Mongolia, look for the detailed description of map coverage and get doubly confused because it says maps cover what they don't because there is no such maps, leave alone that confusion with Windows platform.

Co-Pilot Live is available now and that covers Russia, not sure how good the coverage is though.
