Hotmail sync issues

I have a Lumia (not sure the model - 940 or 960 or... one of the 900 series with a 41 Mpx camera) running WP 8.1 which will not sync hotmail properly. My settings are such that all of history should be updated. I receive mail on the phone fine, and I can send mail. When I delete mail on the phone, it propagates back to the server. So far so good.

However, when I read/delete mail on my laptop, the read/unread marks and deletions are not propagated to the phone.

I thought to remove the mail account, and re-add it, but the phone won't allow me to remove the primary Live account email. I'd prefer not to create a new Live account, do a switcheroo, and later revert back to the original Live account.

Any thoughts on how to force a complete sync?

FYI you have the Lumia 1020, the only Lumia with a 41 mp camera.
How do you access your email on your laptop? Do you use a desktop program? Or do you use a browser?

Like you said you could first try to remove and re-add your email:
1. Go to settings
2. Go to email+accounts
3. Tap on your Microsoft account
4. Untick the box email for the content to sync
5. If necessary force a manual sync (go back to email+accounts, tap and hold your Microsoft account and tap sync)
6. Tick the box email again and force a manual sync again if necessary
