Phone calls using headset jack

I have been using the headset jack on various phones to connect to my car's aux input for listening to my music for the past 5 years. When I make or receive a phone call in the car, I use the car stereo speakers as my speakerphone. I recently got a Lumia 830 and I am having issues with this method.

Whenever a phone call is initiated or answered with the auxiliary cable connected to the headphones jack, I hear nothing but silence and the person on the other end says they cannot hear me either. However, if I answer the phone or initiate a call without the auxiliary cable attached, then plug it in after the call is connected, it functions as expected with the phone's microphone picking up my voice and the caller's voice playing through my car speakers.

I have not yet tested this with actualy headphones. I would assume a normal pair of headphones would exhibit the same behavior because of the plug design. I don't even know if I have access to a heaphones with in-line microphone, which I would assume would be what the headphone jack was designed to take.

I was just curious if anyone else has experienced this issue, or if something is faulty within my phone's headphone jack.

I regularly listen to music with the Nokia earphones I got in the box (complete with mic) and am interrupted by calls, which I can answer and speak and hear the other person just fine. Never used it with a car however.

Unless you're using a hands free headset with a microphone, it won't work.

Well, it does work - just not when the aux cable is plugged in when the phone call is first connected. The strange thing is that it completely kills any communication during that phone call. Even after unplugging the aux. cable, the microphone won't transmit my voice and neither the earpiece speaker nor the loud speaker will play the other caller's voice on my end.

However, as I said in my original post, if I plug in the aux. cable after the call is connected, it works as I expected - voice plays through my car speakers and the phone's microphone transmits my voice. This is how it has worked with every smartphone I've ever owned, including other Nokia Lumia models, without having to connect the phone call and plug in the cable in a specific order.

Surely, this behavior on the Lumia 830 was not done on purpose. I'm just trying to figure out if this is a design flaw in this model number or if the headset jack on my phone is defective.

I know exactly what you are talking about - mine does the same and its beyond annoying. Are you able to say "play music" and have the music app open? That also does not work for me. As bad as a solution as this is, disable Cortana and turn on the speech recognition. Its the old service before Cortana was introduced and does what you are after.
