How can I set a custom ringtone on my Windows 8.1?

Windows 8.1 custom ringtone

Hi, Anyone know why I can't customise ringtones on Windows 8.1 phone ?........I have downloaded them to phone, but they don't appear in ringtone and sounds folder.......any help appreciated........Del.

Try using ringtone maker app published by Microsoft.

You can use a PC, windows phone app allows mp3's to be transferred as a ringtone.

You need to use the ringtone maker app which can be found under Lumia collection of the store. Then u need to pick and create the song u want as ringtone from the app after which it will show up under the ringtones in the settings.

Welcome to Windows Central.

How did you download them to your phone?

There are two ways on how one can set custom ringtones. One is by using a third party app that has access to ringtones, such as Zedge.

The other method is to save the ringtones directly into your phone using your PC. Save your custom ringtone files (.wav or .mp3) in your Phone/Ringtones folder.

Once done, you should see your custom ringtones in your phone settings.

Thanks for the replies.....I should have said the phone is an Archos 40 Cesium, dual sim.......now branded as Bush.......I have got the ringtone to the phone via Zedge and my laptop......it is in the music folder, but it does not appear as as custom ringtone.....and I can't figure out why.....the phone is fully updated..........Del.

Have you tried copying that music file into your Phone/Ringtones* folder?

*- This is a directory; it is not read as "Phone or Ringtones". There is a folder called "Ringtones" inside your "Phone".

According to the laptop, the ringtone IS in the ringtones folder of the phone......but it will not appear there on the actual phone, as a custom ringtone.........I have tried several different ringtones/tunes......and none of them show up in the ringtones folder.....only in the music folder........is it possible that the phone is ''missing'' something ?......as I said it is fully updated...........Del.

According to the official guide for Windows Phone 8 on adding ringtones, you must make sure that the file you're adding is not larger than 30MB and that the music file is not protected with digital rights management (DRM). Additionally, you can visit that page for the details on how to add ringtones in your phone.

Aside from these two, what is the file format of the music files you're trying to set as a ringtone?

Also, please double check that the files are really in the ringtones folder using your phone - use the Files App (not the Music App, not the Ringtones settings) from Microsoft and check the ringtones folder using your phone (not your PC). I'm asking this because you said that your laptop says that "the ringtone IS in the ringtones folder of the phone", but then you also say that the files you're copying are "only in the music folder" which can't both be true.

The file is mp3 format.........I have checked that it is in the ringtones folder, using the method suggested.......and it IS there.........so why won't it show up as a custom ringtone ?........Del.

You have to drag and drop ringtones from folder of ur computer to phone. Like first put ringtones in documents on pc thn open two windows side by side . Open ringtone folder on one side and documents on odr side. Now select all ringtones and drag them with help of mouse to ringtonw folders and You r done. Try and tellme of it works
