Unlocking Lumia 640

I just got a Lumia 640 as well as the unlock code to get it off AT&T.

The instructions said to get a non-ATT sim card.

What companies offer PAYG sim cards not associated with ATT (I'm in the U.S.) and does the card have to have time on it or will the card itself work to unlock the phone? (I plan to only use the phone outside the U.S. and will buy a foreign sim card later.)

You can get a T-mobile prepaid card, and just pay for the card. I remember when I was considering prepaid with them, I just made a call to get a prepaid sim card. However, I do believe that you can get a foreign sim card and then unlock it at that moment as long as you have the code written somewhere to put it in when the time comes.

Re: Unlocking Lumia 640

You don't need a foreign sim to use the unlock code from ATT. Please note:

Unlock keystroke: ##7820#

He means open Phone dialer > input ##7820# > you don't even need to press send it automatically takes you to the carrier lock status screen.

You will see an icon that looks like a locked padlock sitting in front of a SIM card. Tap the input field > input your unlock code and press enter > you will see a "processing" screen > then it will show the icon with the padlock now unlocked.

No "foreign" (meaning non-ATT) SIM is needed.
