how do i do a hard reset of my phone

my phone (640XL) keeps going in loops trying to update and suddenly shows a sad face and then starts all over again.
how do i do a hard reset to get this device back to usable form

you could use Windows Phone recovery tool.

but if you can't get to Settings -> About -> then tap Reset

To reset it with keys is "simple"

Press and hold the Volume down and Power buttons at the same time until you feel the vibration 10 or 15 seconds.

Then release the buttons, and then immediately press and hold the Volume down button and you should get a exclamation mark.

if you got it, press the videogame like four buttons in the order: Volume up button, Volume down button, Power button, Volume down button .

and you would see the screen like it's installing the OS again. so you have to wait and after that it will be full reset.
