How do I stop the keyboard shutting down whilst inserting info?

how do i stop the keyboard shutting down whilst inserting info

If I make a call which requires input eg voicemail setup or car parking input the screen goes blank. The keyboard can be brought back by pressing the start button but shuts down before input can be completed.
