This thread is MOSTLY just for fun, but it would be interesting to see if the scenario is truly possible.
Ever wish you had a remote control that could mute the person trying to talk to you? Technology COULD make that possible, believe it or not.
Let me explain. Using a smartphone app (which this app would definitely be a battery killer, but let's pretend for a second it wouldn't be), the phone could "listen" constantly to the surroundings around you. When someone you don't want to hear starts to talk, you can add this person to the "ignore" list in the "People Mute" app.
The People Mute app would then record a sample of this persons "vocal pattern", and from then on, when it detects that particular vocal pattern (presumably unique to each individual), it would listen for that voice and produce a reverse wave form to cancel it out through your ear buds. You would have to wear earbuds or headphones in order for it to work. Your phone would act as software based noise cancellation circuitry, that would only cancel certain noises, e.g. that annoying person you don't want to listen to.
Why is this better than current noise cancellation technology? Because it would be "selective". You can ignore one individual in a group setting, but still hear everyone else just fine.
This would be great for business meetings, or the nagging wife/girlfriend and/or parent. Great for mother-in-laws as well. I don't recommend it in school, though, except to tune out certain classmates, as it could really be a problem if you tuned out your teacher.
It would also be great for new parents who will take turns getting up with the baby. One can tune out the baby's cry and sleep one night, and let the other one tune it out the other night. Great for sharing the responsibility. Getting every other night to sleep certainly works better than never getting sleep for either person, since with a new baby, you are both woke up all night every night by the crying. At least one of you could get some sleep.
Imagine the construction worker who could mute the noise of tools and machinery while talking normally to his coworkers. Or the mechanic in a tire changing shop muting the sound of the air wrenches and other equipment?
Would this be an easy thing to accomplish? Certainly not.
Is it possible with today's technology? I believe so.
Would it use a lot of resources and kill the battery quickly? I really don't know the answer to that one. Ask an expert.
Can it be implemented as an app in current Lumias on 8.1? Again, I don't know. I'm just an idea man, currently.
This could also be a universal app, and you could wear headphones with your laptop/desktop or tablet as well as your phone.
