I have a Lumia 920. But my wife, sister and mother all have California Blue HTC 8Xs. We are on AT&T. They all have GDR2 installed. I don't.

When I go to Settings→phone storage on my phone, I see a slider bar showing how much of my total space has been used. Right above that, it says "23.96 GB used, encrypted, and to the right, it says 29.12. That seems reasonable, as my phone nominally has 32 GB of storage, and presumably the OS takes up some space (it looks like about 3 GB).

Now, on all those 8Xs in the family, the values above the slider say XXX used, but to the right, the total space is something like 7.3 GB. However, these are 16 GB phones, right? If I assume they are also to be missing about 3 GB, shouldn't they have 13 GB total space? Where is the missing 6 GB?

sounds like they have 8GB variants. the "missing" 3GB aren't OS, it's the calculation of the GB. 1GB is 1024^3 bytes, while manufacturers are allowed to calculate it like 1000^3. so you have 32*1000^24=32000000000 bytes, which makes 32000000000/1024^3= 29.8023223877GB "real" space. Afaik there are 8X's with 8GB space, and the calculation gives 7.45058059692GB, which seems about right.
