How much RAM?

Pre-release reports were saying 1GB (but that seemed too good to be true), and closer to release I heard a lot of tech sites saying 512MB of RAM.

However, the app "WinPhone Info" reports 362,832 KB of RAM (354 MB). Are the numbers from this app trustworthy? Is there another app I can use to report the amount of RAM?

Fairly certain that it has a total of 512MB of RAM, although at any given time, less will be available due to apps utilizing a portion of it.

It has 512mb of RAM. I'm assuming only 354mb is useable because the rest is dedicated to the GPU.

Correct.

HTC puts 576 MB ram in some of their phones to make up for it. So advices like the HD2/7 have 448 MB available to the user/apps.

Subject: [ANSWER][ANSWER]Memory in SGH-I937 (Focus S)

Upon checking the specifications and settings on the Focus? S (SGH-I937), the device has two versions,
16GB and 32GB internal memory storage. The device is also running 1 GB RAM with flat form of Windows 7.5
Mango OS.

The device does not have a memory card slot for you to insert a microSD/microSDHC memory
card.

We recommend coordinating with your service provider for product availability and pricing. You can reach
AT&T Wireless at their hotline number 1-800-331-0500.

In my opinnion, the 32 GB with thanks the cloud computing and apps is no longer that important. Just speculating, but the 1GB, can open the door for not so distant in the futures updates like Windows 8, that sounds will be ready way before a 2Y contract expires.

Anybody hear from AT&T on the 32GB Focus S?

I contacted the Samsung support chat today and they said the Focus S has 512MB. So either

Sorry, either there are 2 versions or someone somewhere is wrong. I read in another post that the Amazon specs show 1GB with 16GB storage. If there is a version with 1GB I'll be returning mine. And is 512MB shared with video enough going forward? I love Mango but I'm more & more tempted to just get an SGS2. I'm contacting Samsung about this again....

I called Samsung support and they told me there is only 1 version of the Focus S - with 16GB storage and 1GB of ram. I wonder if Mango can only see 512MB or if the system info app is incorrect.

Believe me I don't want to...but I don't want to have an underpowered phone in a year either. I chose the Focus S over Android because I like the OS better and because I figured 512MB was ok - same as the iPhone 4S. But if that 512MB is shared with video...not so sure about that. I could get an Android and customize with some WP7 apps\themes and kinda have the best of both worlds.

Yeah, and the instabilities and several other reasons. I'm just a little frustrated at the lack of some killer WP7 hardware and that I'm still not sure how much ram my Focus S really has. I've even contacted Samsung twice about it and gotten 2 different answers. Really Samsung? Post the FULL specs on your website...is that too much to ask?

1GB versus 512MB

Well, I know that the minimum current memory requiered by WP7.5 is 340MB that is relatively close to the commonly available 512MB of virtually all new Windows Phones out there. 1GB (assuming that Mango can allocate that much) would give you more play for waiting tasks, or more demanding requierments of the WP platforms comming in the next couple years. So, it is not really a cuestion if I am out of memory today (very unlikely), it is a question if I will be in 6 months down the road.

I am trying to decide here for a new device... in less than two weeks the HTC Titan will be available, with the common specs of 16GB/512MB, but bigger screen and better body. The Samsung Screen is ok to me, but the 1GB memory, if true, would give me some additional hope to get this same device running with future WP versions.

It really sucks that ATT or Samsung, so far, have not been able to publish a decent specs on this device or a manual that put this debate to rest. To the point that different Samsung tech support people is giving contradictory information.

Well said. Just thinking of having 512MB shared ram gives me flashbacks to upgrading my iPhone 3G to iOS 4. If the Focus S has 1GB that at least gives me hope that it will be upgradeable and usable for the duration of my 2 year contract. And so far no other WP7 phone is even rumored to have 1GB ram...not that I've seen anyway. I'm just trying to make the best choice for hardware that will go the distance of a 2 year contract. The iPhone 4S is probably the safest choice in that regard but I've done the iOS thing and want something different. WP7 is easily my OS choice but the hardware is making my decision for a phone difficult. If we had some seriously high end hardware, even if it was not fully utilized right now, my choice would be easy.

Just compare the devices you are interested in side by side. Why should the numbers even matter that much? It's great to know what is under the "hood", but if you had no idea, would you even care as long as it worked well and provided you the user experience you want? I wish my Focus S was a bit faster, but it is a little bit faster than my Quantum, so, "Yay! Progress!" At this point I really don't care how much RAM it has.

I can certainly understand that some people don't care what's under the hood. However, I do care because the better the hardware is that I purchase now, the more likely I will still be happy with it throughout the duration of my 2 year contract. I'm an early adopter of updates and upgrades and the more RAM this phone has the better. I do agree that the phone as it is now has no need for 1GB of RAM as it is very fast.

There is a WPCentral review of the Focus S that states the phone has 512MB of RAM. So, I just contacted Samsung support, again, about the amount of RAM as I keep getting conflicting reports - even from Samsung.

The support rep I spoke to wouldn't (or couldn't) send me an official spec sheet for the phone. He did, however, reassure me several times that in his support database the phone is listed as having 1GB of RAM. I'd feel better if I had that in writing but he was very adamant that the phone does in fact have 1GB of RAM. I'm thinking that Mango can only address 512MB RAM much like Windows 32 bit editions can only address a total of 4GB of RAM.

Sigh...it shouldn't be this hard just to find out basic information. And woohoo!!! 1GB!!
