How to develop Javascript apps

I'm creating this post in the hopes that I can get some app developers to give me, and hopefully others a helping hand in getting started with app development on Windows devices.

I'm trying to create a simple app using Javascript and I would like it to read the RSS feed from my Blog. I've tried searching high and low for some basic tutorials on this and I can't find one single thing which is becoming frustrating.

I like to know where the best place is to get started and what other people's experiences are with developing apps on Windows. Please share some of your favourite resources and your best and worst experiences.

I would quite like this article to be a good reference for others who might be starting out.

Hi Laura,

Thank you for moving this thread, didn't see a developers corner on here.

Superunderscore, I have looked at that and it wasn't 100% what I wanted. I could have probably tweaked it to what I wanted, but they were trying to code it on a split app when I wanted it to be a Windows Phone or Hybrid app.

I've taken a look at a few sample apps which look to be what I need to start... Windows 8 AtomPub sample in C#, C++, JavaScript for Visual Studio 2013 and Windows 8 Syndication sample in C#, C++, JavaScript for Visual Studio 2013

I will look into which one best suits my needs and tweak it until I'm happy. Can I ask what you usually develop in and do you think it's better than using Javascript? Would love to get other's feedback on what they use and how easy it was to get them started. Seems there are more tutorials on C# for creating apps.

I use C# and XAML, can't say it's better because I never used HTML, Javascript. And yeah, there are more C# tuto's for Windows and WP app since it's MSFTs own language.

Hmm, I might try to learn C# and see if it makes app development any easier. I heard that it's pretty easy to learn and it might even benefit me in the long run.

I'm not coding for 8, I'm coding for 8.1 I've started to learn c# in the hopes it's a better learning experience than JavaScript is at the minute.

I cannot speak personally but I can tell you there is a lack of information out there at some points yet at the same point it is growing rapidly as it is explored more. The app we have just released (Notapic - (shameless plug)) is largely Javascript based and has a lot of deep features that have been huge fun to get working, with little to no foundations to work with it is not easy. However the results have been more than worth the effort in a few unexpected ways like load reduction and flexibility amongst others. I would tend to advise you to pursue it with sources like MSDN being one of the best places to start searching for answers, here is a result from a RSS search. If you are still really stuck send me a message and I will see if someone has a little time to write up something more specific to help you.

I've been checking out Microsoft Virtual Academy and have noticed that there are quite a few HTML 5/Javascript tutorials coming soon which I will definitely have to follow and see if I can learn some stuff from them. I'm still checking out any C# tutorials and will hopefully be creating some apps soon.

I don't really want to ask anyone to build me any apps, as I would love to learn how it's done and hopefully create more in the future, but thank you for offering and I will take a look at the app you have created and give it a lovely review.
