How to force GPS to be tracking at all times?

I have been using WP8 on a Lumia 720 for about half a year now. Even though the UI looks very slick and stylish, I'm greatly disappointed by WP8's lack customization options and available apps.

One particular nuisance I came across recently is that my GPS stops tracking when the screen gets turned off. For example, I used sport related apps to track my favorite running route. After starting the app and choosing 'start workout', i turn the display off. I make a little tour, and after 30 minutes I arrive at my starting point again. Then I turn on my telephone screen, and it turns out the app has drawn one straight, very short line on the map from my starting point to my finish point (which are practically next to each other).

Is this 1) my phone not functioning correct, 2) me failing to configure my phone correctly or 3) a major fault in the WP8 operating system? Thanks in advance for any response!

I've used Endomondo to track my bike rides with the screen off and it tracked my route just fine. The only GPS setting I know of are turning it off and on, under location is settings. Maybe check the app's settings and make sure it's not an app issue?

In order to track GPS while screen is off or app is at background, the app must have a special background task agent to do so. Sounds like op's app didn't have this feature. WP8 OS definitely supports this but WP7 doesn't.

Btw, apps can also request not to be suspended when screen turns off. The dev needs to enable this in the code.
