how to get sound for a MKV file video

Another possibility is to use Wondershare. I think you get some free uses before you have to pay, but it'll convert ANY format into ANY format. My Blu-ray player will play movies on a thumb drive if it's in MKV format. Wondershare will take any mpg, mp4, avi, etc and convert it into an MKV. It also downloads any video online so I sprang for the paid version and use it all the time.
 
Another vote for VLC Media Player. It plays MKV files just fine. If there is still no sound playing an MKV file in VLC, check your sound card hardware and drivers.
