So I decided today to try to get windows 10 technical preview...but when I signed up to be an insider, I says 'coming soon' and to come back later...Is there a way of downloading the ISO from an external website? Thanks

It WAS available via their downloads page but looks like they took it offline to update to the iso's to the lastest versions. I was able to install from usb when they started the program a couple of months ago and it's been very stable for me. Use it on my gaming machine, multiple monitors, runs very well with a nice middle ground between what was good in Windows 7 and what I liked about Windows 8 with the start screen adjustments.

When you install Win 10 TP, does it offer the choice of installing Dual Boot or would I have to do a VM installation to keep from overwriting my 8.1?

What I do is download the .iso, mount it using imDisk (probably could use explorer but haven't yet) and using the Manage function (Right click This PC), I build a VHD (formatted) and install the TPR build there. Next is to create a boot call using EasyBCD to add the VHD to the bootable options. I have all three builds so far on a HDD and can boot to any as I "play". Windows8 forum has a good tutorial on doing this.

Just a suggestion if you don't have or want to use VM.

Dual boot possible, but you need to do the work for that.
VM recommended if you want to be safe and have the horsepower to back it up.
