I have moved on to a 8X but, I wanted to provide URLs for a noob guide on how to install a custom rom on your Verizon HTC Trophy. The Verizon HTC Trophy is also known by a Spark_W (HTC's code name for it)

Why should I install a custom rom on my phone ?
Answer: You can get Windows Phone 7.8 8858 RTM/Final on your phone TODAY with all the root tools to add tons of features along with 7.8. Tethering works, unlimited side loading, and tons of 3rd party hacks and apps that add a lot of feaures and apps to your phone. One of my favs was, Advanced Config. This allowed you to create or chose from 100+ different colors to add to 7.8. Any color you can think of, you can add with it. I think it was worth unlocking your phone to just to get the color options but, there are a lot of cool options to play with. It opens a new world for your phone.

How long will this take and what is the risk ?

I say about an hour for reading and double read it, understand how to do EACH step, re-read while doing it so you dont miss anything. Then about 25-35 min for the acutal flashing of your phone, you will need to flash it 2 times. If you follow the directions, I think it's very, very rare that you could do something that will break your phone. I have not seen one. Just follow the directions and spend the time to do it right.

Dont fear, it looks like a lot but, the link tells you what to do with images and everything. There is only 3 steps really, downgrade your SPL, Unlock your phone, then flash rom...it's pretty easy once you understand it.

In a nut shell,
1. Check your SPL version, if you are higher than 2.01, you need to downgrade your SPL (any phone that was is on Mango or higher will have 2.01 or higher), and that is done by installing a older OEM rom (RUU_Spark_W_VERIZON_WWE_1.03.605.22_RS0512_2K_4K_h ybrid_new_partition_RELEASE) Install, then move on.
2. Install DFT unlock to unlock your phone
3. Flash the 7.8 rom below...

This is the link for the details on above, read this, 3-4 times so you know.(links to download the older rom on there too) There are images for all the SPL questions with details
[HOWTO] Use DFT HSPL with Verizon Trophy (SparkW only!) [Revised 2-NOV-2012] - xda-developers

This is where to get OEM factory rom (as listed on step 1). If you are on Tango or higher on your device, you will have the MNG and it would be very safe just to install this to lower your SPL (should be the first step away)
http://hotfile.com/dl/160209769/14b...2_2K_4K_hybrid_new_partition_RELEASE.exe.html

This is where to get the DFT unlock (read this first post a few times, The Verizon HTC Trophy is a Spark_W, that is HTC's code name for it)
[DFT][Updated!#3] HSPL / RSPL for HTC WP7 First Generation - xda-developers

Download this 7.8 rom. This is the one I used and will stand by it. It is perfect and runs great. No issues at all with it. Only advice, do not hard reset, just reflash rom, as some issues pop up time to time. It has everything with the root tools and a non-blotware rom, so it's pretty clean with just the tools you need. If you wanted to remove stuff, go for it, just keep the Root tools, you will need that to run some apps.
[UPE/OS]★(? `•.Windows Phone ? 7.8 for HTC Spark_W(Veriz.)[7.10.8858.136][RTM].•??)★ - xda-developers

After this point, your phone is fully unlocked, you can install any Spark_W rom that you want, so as newer versions come out, they could be all over XDA...

There is a very slim risk but, there is still a risk, Read and read again, You do this at your own risk, this post is just to help !

Post back with your results and hit thanks if this helped ! Most of all, have fun !

By doing this you WILL LOSE YOUR DATA backup as needed. THis is replaceing the OS on your phone, no way around this.

Edit: Updated for the Factory rom location.

So I have a quick question. My Trophy is currently running Tango, updated through Zune. I checked and my phone has the dreaded "MNG" bootloader. I always thought from reading through threads that I would have to build a gold card setup to downgrade the bootloader. Is that not the case?

I was going to order parts for a goldcard flashing, but life got in the way and I never got around to it. If I don't have to do that then this process is much easier than I thought!

No need to. If you read in the thread above (the first link), download the factory rom "RUU_Spark_W_VERIZON_WWE_1.03.605.22_RS0512_2K_4K_h ybrid_new_partition_RELEASE" after you download flash you phone with it (warning will wipe your phone) that is a NODO rom (early rom) that will download your SPL so you no longer have the MNG.

Edit: I checked on the original thread, the link is dead, I made a post to see if anyone knows where to get it...

Note: anyone who is on Mango or higher will have the dreaded MNG but, flashing a older factory rom will fix the problem with out the need for any other 3rd party tools (unless you bricked your phone)

I actually found a good link on page 3 of that thread. Link here:
xda-developers - View Single Post - [HOWTO] Use DFT HSPL with Verizon Trophy (SparkW only!) [Revised 2-NOV-2012]

By the way, I just finished going through this process and it worked like a charm. I was actually surprised by how painless the process was. It looks a little intimidating at first but after reading through a few times I realized it was actually pretty simple. Thanks for posting this!

Edit: I should add that I highly recommend trying this for anyone who is considering it. Not only do you get 7.8, but it unlocks a lot of other cool stuff that is not even possible to do on WP8 right now. There is a small risk involved (but it seems to be well tested by now), and you'll have to wipe your phone, but if those things don't bother you too much then it's definitely worth it.

When I had my trophy, I found it very easy to do this, it's really 3 steps, Flash older OEM rom, Do the unlock process (easy to do) and flash the rom of your choice. Anyone on Tango or higher will have the MNG, so most people should just flash that rom anyway, it's nice safe step before trying to unlock.

I have my HTC 8x and I hate that there is no full unlock yet available for it. So many limits and I am not talking about sideloading marketplace apps(pirating software), it's the 3rd party tools, there is even a marketplace for the little hacks and If you want unlmited color options, Avanced config is what you want, it was worth it just for that. I really miss that feature of more colors for my tiles on my 8x that I had on my trophy...

Now you know why I said to read it a few times, after you understand it...it's so easy anyone with a little PC know how could do this and figure out the process in a few min....but, if you read it a few times so you know for sure, you wont even have to worry, there is almost nothing that could go wrong.

Do you by chance have a working link to the Advanced Config tool? The link on XDA to the latest version (1.5) is dead:
Advanced Configuration Tool 1.5 - xda-developers

The version posted on the website, touchxperience.com, is an older version (1.2.2.0) and it crashes right away when I try to start it on my phone.

Or if you could just post the xap itself that would be much appreciated as well :)

Edit: never mind, I found it on Bazaar. Still getting used to the rooted phone business.

i'm thinking about trying this since verizon may not come through for us, but i have a question. i've skimmed through the xda threads you mentioned and didnt really find a definitive answer. if i do this, will i still have all the data on my phone, like messaging history, call history, apps/files/settings? also, if verizon does eventually come through with the update, can i revert to whatever version i need to be at to get the official update, while still having all my history/data etc? basically, if there is a hard reset anywhere in the process or anything that would cause me to loose my data, i probably wont do it.

Unfortunately this method will cause you to lose all your data. On the bright side though, once you you have an unlocked ROM there are a lot of good options to back up all your texts, app data, etc. If you don't want to lose anything then you might want to try the seven-eighter tool that was posted on WPCentral's home page yesterday. That will give you the official 7.8 update.

Sure, if you want a factory locked device. This rom gives you a fully rooted device. WIth features you can not get with the OEM download. If that is what you want, go for it, someone who wants more out of their phone should try this... You can go back to OEM if you hate it that much (not sure why you would once you play with things on it)....

Yes, flashing a rom will wipe out your phone, no way around this.

Edited first post with the URL to the older OEM rom as suggested...

Has anyone noticed how tethering hasn't worked in that particular ROM? I had to use the 8838 and proceed to use the manual cab updater to get more stable results than his 8858 rom.

Anyways, keep a lookout at the Dynamics ROM for HTC Trophy. Previously in the past it has only been for the world edition, but now there is a Beta build for the Verizon Trophy. He is looking for testers, please PM him over there! I'm testing it and its a great rom! (note: I'm using this as a pda, the phone part has been deactivated for porting the number to the Lumia 928. Great device to jump to.
