HTC 8x - Email Notifications

The new email notification sound goes off at seemingly random times throughout the day when there isn't a new email. Also, I read emails as they arrive so it isn't that an unread email is sitting in the inbox either. When it happens I check facebook and text messages also just to be sure the notification isn't alerting me to one of those and there isn't any activity there either.

Is anybody else experiencing this? If so how can I stop this?

Have you read email messages somewhere other than the phone? My WP8 phones will make the sound when I read Gmail messages--it seems to make the sound on a change from unread to read, as well as when new email is received.
