I'm krisguy, and I'm the Ambassador over at VRHeads. With the change in focus, I'm bringing my love and knowledge of the HTC Vive to everyone at WC.

I know the setup and config of SteamVR and the Vive headset like the back of my hand. Please feel free to ask any questions you like.

I have it since launch, love playing Rec Room but I was waiting for a true AAA game, do you recommend any?
Cheers

I'm in the middle of moving from the midwest to Utah, so my Vive is packed and waiting to be shipped right now.

I would recommend Fallout 4 VR or (most likely) Skyrim VR, because the motion system is very intuative, plus I've also been able to use an Xbox control with a kluge.

Hi @krisguy, A quick question for you. I didn't start a new thread, but if you've experienced the symptoms I'm about to describe then maybe we should :-). I have had the oddest thing happening lately.

Scenario: HTC Vive, lighthouses connected via Bluetooth

  1. Hit the VR button in steam (everything starts up normally)
  2. Hit the System menu button, tracking is lost on both controllers - slow blinking on the status menu.
  3. Right click on each controller and select identify controller - Each will buzz and return to normal tracked operation
  4. Hit the system menu button again - lighthouses turn off (???)
  5. Unplug and plug in lighthouses - everything is detected and works
  6. Hit the system menu, tracking is lost on both controllers...
  7. And round and round we go until I reboot the computer then everything returns to normal.

Are you familiar /have seen /have heard of this or similar? I uninstalled everything and reinstalled but the problem still popped up from time to time.
My current hypothesis is that it has something to do with having WMR and Vive + Steam VR all installed on the same machine but I'm not sure.

Have you ever seen anything like this before?
Cheers, Dave

your the second guy to recommend me Fallout. Have you tried it? Is it worth the price? I normally don't really like RPG, I've played The Witcher 3 but it's too many quests and I tend to get lost/bored. I love FPS but I bought Doom VR and asked for a refund after 20 min since I was disappointed with the graphics (probably because I've played Doom non VR and was hoping for something similar in terms of graphics) do you believe Fallout will be more interesting?
Cheers

I bought Fallout day 1. Worth it.

I haven't seen that before. The only thing I can think of is make sure the USB is 2.0 not 3.0. I had random stuff like this until I used a 2.0 port.

Definitely USB 2 :-)

I've managed to completely get rid of the issue and then recreate it again to test my theory that WMR + Vive + Steam don't play nicely on my setup. Uninstalling the WMR software and Windows Mixed Reality for Steam VR software and the issue of controllers disappearing and lighthouses shutting off went away.

As a test I re-installed the software and the exact symptoms reappeared.

Uninstalled the software again, restarted and the problem is gone.

So in a completely unscientific trial, 1 out of 1 computers cannot run Steam, and WMR without the lighthouses shutting down when the user hits the system menu button. I call that mystery SOLVED :-)

Yeah, USB3 creates some problems. And Steam VR needs to be worked, it´s a hit or miss for things to work sometimes...

Is it all USB3 or some USB3 chipsets. I believe my friend had some difficulty setting up his Vive and had to buy a different USB PCIE card.

I believe it was early chipsets causing the issue with power. Please, research, and don't take my word for it!
