Not having WiFi, I seem to be stuck in a sh' hole with this phone, as I guess I'm unable to carry out any 'up'grades without it.

I've posted the following message on the Windows Phone - Microsoft Community website to see if I can get any feedback from them (posted Yesterday)....the title is "Unable to upload Portico on Lumia 820", just so you understand where I start from :

"Well no surprise I guess, considering I don't have WiFi access!

I seriously have never known such a stupid user un-friendly system as Windows 8, especially when we come across these things such as 'software upgrades'.

Did Microsoft presume that everybody would have WiFi, or was it simply missed out on the packaging as they were afraid of luring in less custom?

Today I drove across town to a large Shopping Mall, where I knew they would have WiFi facilities, just to download this upgrade, only to be confronted with a long list of different 'error codes' preventing me STILL from being able to carry out the upgrade.

I travelled to my gym where they have WiFi access, only to find a new error code '801882cb' appear after the phone had managed to download a measly 4%

Why can't we just have a straightforward system on the computer, like iTunes, where I can simply plug my phone in to the usb port and download through the computer?! Considering you are MICROSOFT, I would have thought this would have been your direction when designing/building this software package for phones.

Come on guys, stop trying to think outside the bubble to get the next generation of software, and look at the reality of what the general day-to-day public would like."

As expected, I've not had a response, and so feel like I'm kind of stuck in a predicament where I just can't get any 'upgrades', as and when.

Is anybody else in the same situation?

My 8X came preloaded with Portico , but I received an HTC firmware update & When I hit update , a Pop-Up Warning came up , You know the usual Data charges apply , use Wi-Fi .... Are You sure you want to precede ... etc , I was logged to Wi-Fi & disabled Mobile Data though , so it used Wi-Fi !

If you hit precede while using 3G only , I guess it will use that instead !

If you have a data plan , that might work

Seems like the gym Wi-fi isn't that stable and their connection is flaky, causing that error. And I'm wondering how you're surviving in the 21st century without some form of personal Wifi at home, it's almost 'Kriminal' without it. Every cable company provides one WiFi router for free when you sign up a plan.

Any chance you could hit up an internet cafe? I'm not sure what country you live in but there HAS to be some area with WiFi. Also...if you have a computer at home, how are you able to connect to the internet? Unless you only have a LAN connection or something...it may not be worth the hassle of trying to do all that when you can just get a WiFi router no?

However, if you must find a way to do without the above solution...your best bet is coffee shop, internet cafe, or a friend's house. Just tell them that you're in a silly predicament and I'm sure they'll understand!

But yes, I'm surprised there is no feature to turn off the "update via wifi only" feature.

In fact...where did you purchase the phone from? You could go into a wireless carrier store (or use a friend's phone) and either use their wifi or covertly turn on internet sharing/tethering on one of their phones and tether your phone to that. Your device will assume it's wifi and download the update through that.

Thanks for the replies.....much appreciated.

I'm from the UK, and using a LAN connection at home to good 'ole Router from my Desktop, using Windows XP.......so yeah, nothing like the good 'ole days....lol

I did talk to Virgin (the supplier of my Broadband connection), and there is no problem with them supplying the WiFi router, free of charge. However, before I made the call, I did do a little research on their forums and have been advised to just NOT bother, as it's got to be one of the least stable connections out there (the Virgin one, that is). They kind of advised me to go and buy my own, if I really need one, but my finances aren't great right now, and my feelings are that I shouldn't HAVE to buy extra accessories to use a phone....especially without being pre-warned that this will be a future requirement.

I spent a good hour+ last Saturday over at a Shopping Mall, where they have plenty of Coffee shops with Wifi, and I just kept getting a bundle of different error codes being spouted back at me, so that plan kind of died quickly.

IceDree : the phone doesn't give me any other option, apart from 'Dismiss'. So, although I can select 3G manually under the Settings command, it just doesn't seem to make much difference.

Ohh my bad , My 8X gave two options "Precede" & "Dismiss" , So I thought they are all the same , You know Same experience & all ! my bad !

I was in your same situation a couple of years ago , when I tried to update my Atrix from FroYo to GingerBread ! I eventually did it at a local Starbucks cafe !

There are PC Apps that makes your computer acts a hotspot , I heard about them before , but I don't know any of them !

Also , Doesn't Nokia have a PC Suite or something like that ? Some of them have an option to update the phone via PC , Sony always had one ... even on Android ! Motorola Doesn't ! Samsung have one , but I rather die than use it ! it makes me homicidal !

The only reason I have WiFi in my hose is Windows Phone. There were already issues with installing apps on WP7. Some people said, back in the times, you can install large apps over Zune, that never worked for me, so finally I gave in...

Now it's quite comfortable to have it, to be honest.

Have you tried going to a friend's and using their wifi or your neighbour or putting your sim into another phone that has hotspot (if you have another phone hat's capable of it)

You have a Nokia, and there is something called Nokia Care Suite.
Alternatively you can buy a usb wireless antenna for a pretty low price in order to turn your pc into a wireless router/modem.
Anyways, the all OTA thing is really stupid but I guess is the direction the world is moving.

Hey, no need to apologise, IceDree....if anything, I'd have presumed the same - you would THINK we're all kind of running the same software, so would get the same options.

I attempted the Nokia PC Suite option, but that doesn't recognise the Lumia phones unfortunately....still, was worth a go. A big shame they didn't keep that option, in my opinion. I remember having the Sony one, that you mentioned - life seemed so much simpler using that...lol

Huime : I had NO idea that you could buy a USB wireless antenna! That seems to be my best option at the moment, as I'm currently out of work, studying to be a Personal Trainer....so the funds can be a little tight at times. Does anybody have any idea how 'effective' these things are? I was considering popping back in to the phone shop tomorrow and asking them if THEY can download it in their store for me; but looking at the USB option, it could be something that would help me overcome any other future 'WiFi' predicaments.

Thanks again for the replies everyone

Perhaps an OS update will add the button enabling you to Proceed.

But more seriously, I'd expect you to find somewhere with Wi-Fi - a friends house, coffee shop etc. that will work. The updates not that fussy.

When using Nokia Care Suite, did you follow the instructions on this forum? It's a little different than flashing my Lumia 900. My Lumia 900 it had no problem detecting, but when I flashed my Lumia 920 you need to reboot and get it in some sort of flashing mode or else it'll say it can't detect it.

And you can definitely use a USB wireless adapter to create a wireless access point.

Not PC suite, thats for s40 and Symbian phones.
You need NOKIA CARE SUITE.

YaaaaaY.....problem finally solved, for now.

As I was in town this afternoon, I popped in to an O2 store (the phone store I use for connection). Spoke politely to a bloke in there, and he was more than happy for me to use their WiFi connection. After twenty minutes of sitting in the corner (it must have looked like a naughty chair to other customers), the 'update' has finally downloaded.

He said to me afterwards that if I ever need to use WiFi again, for anything like upgrades, just come on in and use their WiFi. So it looks like I may stick to my trusty ole LAN connection for now, unless my financial situation changes, that is.

Thanks again everyone for all your input

Kriminal, glad you got sorted. As I understand it WP8 always defaults to WiFi. It'll try that first to get a connection. Only then will it fall back to the phone network. Maybe if it knows a big download is available it won't even try to do it over the phone network to save your data costs. Do yourself a favour and get yourself a wireless router, with cabled LAN if you want. They're cheap as chips now. I'm running an eight year old Belkin router with my PC wired into it and my 820 WiFi'd into it. My 820 leaves my PC for dead!
