8.1 + Cyan was returned to Microsoft by Verizon as not passing Vzw testing. It is marked as Under Development here: Availability in North America - Nokia

So even though this phone is unlocked and I am not connected to Verizon at all, I need to get the update from Verizon? That doesn't make sense to me?

Unfortunately phones do update under their branding even after a SIM unlock... Sorry.

One way around this is to flash alternate firmware, but there is no alternate firmware as 822 was only ever released on Verizon. Sorry again.

1) Phone software updates are bound by the ROM it's running and NOT the carrier SIM card it's using
2) Lumia 822 being a Verizon Wireless exclusive doesn't have any other global variants
3) Since the only Rom possible on the 822 is the Verizon version, it would only get updates once Verizon releases it
4) To get Cyan and possibly Denim officially, the phone is dependant on Verizon
5) To get 8.1 Update 1 unofficially you get get enrolled in the Preview for Developers program

Note what pankaj said... Preview for Developers uncouples Firmware from the OS. You could have 8.1.1 and still be on Lumia Black.

When Verizon pushes Cyan you could get Official 8.1 + Cyan and then get back on the P4D and be at 8.1.1 + Cyan... Then another push OTA by Verizon to be Official 8.1.1 + Denim.
