If people would be given the chance to customise the name then many would choose special names but there would be a few who i fear would abuse that customisation and use demeaning names

Well, the phone isn't going to complain. (man, I sound AI-ist here)

Personally, I'd like to use the name of the phone. I name my gadgets for characters in various things.
Laptop's named "whenua", my 640 is named "Batou" etc.
