this makes me wonder how concept teams work. i would think this would be rejected as soon as someone drew it up, but there must be some value in the process, i guess.

Look at concept cars that are at car shows. They basically never come out as you see them. What you do generally see is parts of it showing up in retail models. R&D/Concepts often times never see the light of day but can influence final products.
