I have a 32gb Surface RT and was quite surprised to find an increase in available storage after the update. I now have 13.1gb free out of 26.4gb. Before the update I had about 9gb.

Anybody else?

Well that explains it then. With so little storage I find myself counting every little byte. Next time I'll spring for at least a 64gb.

I have the same result, I'm using a 32GB model of Surface RT, before RT 8.1 update, I remember I had about 6~7GB of free space left, and after RT 8.1 update, I have about 12GB of free space left, which is a good thing considering there's only 16GB available to users on a 32GB model.

just speculating but I think they may have cut the bulk of core apps out of the recovery image and instead have them auto download from the store on first boot. I'm really not sure where they could carve off 4 gig from the image....that's cutting a LOT of fat. I predict when Office goes all metro they will dump that out of the recovery partition and point to the store links as well.

Hell, it happened in my laptop too. I had around 11gigs of space in my C:. After installing it, I got around 12gig more. Awesome.

About the limited storage issue: I have a 32 GB device, too. My solution was to buy a 64 GB SD card and use it as my library. All photos, videos, documents etc are stored there. Plus i make good use of SkyDrive (7 GB free). Quite happy with this.

And don't forget, SkyDrive now supports having it's local copy/cache of data on the SD card. Handy.
