Hi,

with the new WP 8.1 we can now set Internet Explorer to run in background.
But... IE when is closed is closed.. it has no background task. So why in the battery management i can set it to run in background? What does it really do?
Thanks

I have been taking those background usage statistics under settings with a grain or two of salt since 8.1
In order to save battery I would monitor them frequently and determine which was hogging more power. I eventually just turned off everything but IE as wasn't sure about it. Then reading somewhere on here about IE being a background power hog I started paying more attention to it. It seemed my battery since I started all this monitoring and adjusting background tasks hadn't really gotten noticibly better and IE still showed minimal background usage. I decided to turn it off(IE)for background tasking and then I noticed a bit of better life for my battery. Not sure what it was doing there and why it wasn't seemingly showing up in the little meter, but I've had it off for for a couple of months and don't notice anything missing in its performance and I believe its saving me some juice. YMMV of course, but for my usage I saw no real reason to let it run 24/7 if I wasn't using it.
To not answer your question, I have no idea what it really does in the background, but I'm leaving it off and saving a bit of juice.

In Windows Phone 8.1 and Windows 8.1, if a developer chooses, their website can be a live tile. So, since WPCentral has coded their website for the option of being used as a live tile, pinning the desktop version of WPCentral to your start screen will actually result in it being a live tile and not just shortcut to the website (WMPowerUser is the same way).

In order for IE to function like this it will have to run in the background to update the live tile website, just like any other live tile...
