Is it me or is it all getting a bit messy

I appreciate that by the looks of things newer devices have had a smoother ride with the update process but for the rest of us the update process seems to be almost out of control

For instance my faithful and mostly reliable Lumia 720 fails to complete backups like many others, it has yet to receive Cyan or 8.1 official, my carrier o2 Uk now says it has cleared Cyan and i guess 8.1 and sent it back to Ms to release but also added a note there still may be delays due to problems ( unknown by us shmucks ) 8.1 dp update is now released prior to the official stuff but that is failing to install ??? i know i know i know, its a developer preview for testing purposes but how the heck can you give feedback of any relevance when it appears and IS such a mess with sooo many people using different versions fully installed, half installed and not installed at all ??

i thought the Cyan official 8.1 update was a mess until the 8.1 GDR1 update arrived ... now its almost out of hand .. or is it just me ??

I wouldn't believe anything O2 said - after that announcement (which applied to all devices), they turned around and said it wouldn't be released until the 12th. In reality, the only ones that actually have received the update are the ones showing as available on the tracker page.

It is a bit messy but keep in mind just like Android a lot of WP devices are carrier exclusives and a lot of vendors. On iOS there is only one vendor and about a handful of devices so the update goes very smoothly. Having said that, Android people don't even get an update unless they plunked down a lot of money on a high end device. So I think despite the messiness the fact that we can get an update directly from MSFT via Developer Preview or eventually through the carriers via Lumia Cyan is a sign of progress - messiness not withstanding.

Agreed... the only way people on low end devices got a firmware update through normal channels was buying a higher end phone.

Yup, so even though broken the Developer Preview is a good middle ground. My old Sammy never got an update from the original 2.3.6. Hence when I had to get a new device I went straight to Nexus series and a month later jumped on the WP bandwagon and rest as they say is history. I have an 810 which is a EOLd device and without Developer Preview I would be on Lumia Amber....and probably wanting to switch platforms again....

awesome, i am just trying a new method which involves some swearing, doing a dance to the update gods, removing my WiFi connection, hard resetting my phone, re enabling WiFi, plugging into pc and the update process says.... attention required, you need to charge your phone to continue... from fully charged 2 hrs ago... you son - of - a - b***h !!!

hold on here goes, my Pc has stuffed enough coal into the phone for the update process to resume... shall see what pans out

just seen JB saying it might be low system storage and there looking into it ...que pic i cant be bothered to find

Still only a tad bit better than rooting your low end Android, manually installing Clockwork Mod 2.0x, backing up the existing ROM in the Recovery folder and then looking to see which version of CM nightly or stable you should install....he, he...

Thanks for the laugh, Ipaq was a Compaq brainchild before being swallowed up by HP. Wonder why HP is not releasing a WP device?

They flogged their ARM stuff to Intel, who added it to their Xscale processors, which then got sold onto somebody else.

HP would have to license a new core design from ARM I think.

Bah !! that didnt work, i freed up more space on my phones int mem by deleting maps and needed apps and music, i only have 8gb total and 3.36 is now free, joe said it might be a disk space issue so i tried that avenue, it failed and i need anti wrinkle sleep

with no wifi tomorrow and barely a phone signal i will have another stab at this slick process tom night, gn all

I don't see it as messy. It seems pretty straight forward TBH. There will be a core 3 million (or so) that will always be on the newest version and the other X million will either be one step behind the core group or they'll be in the process of jumping from being 2 steps behind to 1 step behind.

It would be nice if MS could arrange (at least with some carriers) to just push the OS update to every device at the same time, then the carriers push the firmware at their own leisure.

I think when we get GDR2 on Preview (November wasn't it?), everybody else will get GDR1 officially.

I have decided to fold and hold, un registered from further dev previews and once or if I get official cyan and 8.1 that will do me, this current mess is enough for me now
